Royal Enfield Motorcycles: A Legacy To Be Proud Of
Motorcycles have been a huge part of many cultural identities for decades now. Of them all, one name stands out as a consistent, stable, and dependable entry in the history of motorcycles: Royal Enfield. We here at Willamette Valley Harley-Davidson know a thing or two about historic bikes, so we’ve put together a brief overview of the Royal Enfield® motorcycle legacy. To learn more about that legacy, or to see the Royal Enfield bikes we have for sale, contact our store in Eugene, Oregon, today!
Firm Foundations
Royal Enfield released their very first motorcycle in 1901. This was the culmination of ten years of innovations by British entrepreneurs Bob Walker Smith and Albert Eadie after they purchased a bicycle manufacturing company in Redditch, England. That first model utilized a 5.5 horsepower engine and a belt-drive rear wheel, which was groundbreaking at the time. Since then, Royal Enfield® motorcycles have been at the forefront of the technology race, making them the oldest motorcycle company that’s been in continuous production.
The War Effort
When World War I broke out, Royal Enfield was ready to help defend their homeland and provided the British War Department with massive fleets of motorcycles. Between the World Wars, they introduced their first off-roading motorcycle and developed the first motorcycle with a fully enclosed engine space. World War II saw them supplying the Allied forces with yet more motorcycles. The most famous of these was the “Flying Flea” which was designed for use by paratroopers!
